Information for Private Schools in Puerto Rico about Hurricanes Relief and Resources

Dear Dr. Guzman-Pinero,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and unharmed from the impact of Hurricane Irma.

I want to provide the below information on federal Hurricane Harvey relief and recovery resources.  The Department is in the process of establishing a separate webpage for Hurricane Irma, but, in the meantime, the information below is very relevant and, thus, I wanted to ensure you are aware of it.

ONPE is aware that, in Texas, the governor identified the Texas Private School Association as the point of contact for all private schools in the State.  This has facilitated coordination of data collection on the status (i.e., open, closed, damaged, etc.) of private schools in the State.  Any information that you can provide regarding the status of private schools in Florida would be welcomed.

Know that ONPE will keep all those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in our thoughts and prayers, and, we stand ready to assist.

Maureen

Hurricane Harvey Webpage

ED’s Hurricane Harvey Information webpage contains relevant information from the U.S. Department of Education as well as links to other Federal resources to assist those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. ED will update the website as new information is received and we encourage you check the site regularly.

Federal Student Loan Information

The Department has directed federal student loan servicers to provide impacted borrowers flexibility in managing their loan payments during this time. Borrowers can contact their student loan servicer for more information or call 1-800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) to find out their servicer’s contact information.  Additional information for borrowers is available from Federal Student Aid at https://studentaid.gov/hurricane-harvey.

Federal Interagency Briefings

The Department is participating in daily interagency briefings led by the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA in order to understand the extent of the damage to educational infrastructure and the needs of its education stakeholders in the wake of Harvey.  The Department's interagency work will inform and enhance the resources and relief that it will make available to school districts and institutions of higher education and nonpublic schools as the recovery work begins.

Disaster Recovery Resources and Assistance

Visit the Disaster Assistance website to access disaster help and resources.

Visit the FEMA Public Assistance website for information about FEMA's Public Assistance (PA) grant program, which provides federal assistance to government organizations and certain private nonprofit (PNP) organizations, including nonprofit K-12 schools, following a Presidential disaster declaration.  Additional information is available in the Public Assistance Program and Policy Guide (April 2017).

Visit the FEMA's Individual Assistance website for information on grant programs for homeowners and renters for disaster survivors.
